New Caledonia became a French territory in 1853. In 1946 it became an overseas territory of the French Republic. Direct rule by France was discontinued on 14 July 1989, and the provincial councils gained a degree of limited autonomy.

It was covered by the WHO Representative Office in the South Pacific.
